Most dogs and cats are more than pets. They’re members of the family. This means they’re not only a part of life’s daily routines, but also those special moments that bring a family closer — like adventures aboard your boat.
That’s why Sea Ray Boats created the Pet and Water Safety (PAWS) program, to help boaters keep their pets healthy and happy on the water. In a recent survey, the company found that more than 60% of Sea Ray owners had dogs and cats, and nearly two-thirds of them take their pets — primarily dogs — on their boats between five and 15 times a season.
“A number of boating groups and websites encourage the use of dog lifejackets, but not a lot of other practical advice exists,” said Rob Noyes, vice president of marketing of Sea Ray. “Since a lot of our owners have pets and take them boating, we saw this as an opportunity to step up and create a primary resource on the subject.”
Sea Ray conceived and launched the PAWS website, which currently includes articles, guidelines, safety tips, contests, gear, and special offers from sponsors. Sea Ray was pleased that Nestle Purina PetCare agreed early on to become the official pet food sponsor for the program, as well as to have Onyx sign on as the PFD sponsor.
“It’s crucial for pet owners to be aware of the special considerations for pets around the water, so the fun isn’t spoiled by an unsuspected emergency or illness,” said Christopher Padgett, vice president of marketing for Nestle Purina PetCare. “We’re proud to take a lead role in the PAWS program. Pets and pet owners love the water and boats, and we think this is a great way to get the message out about pet safety.”
Sea Ray hopes to attract more sponsors in the near future, in order to further spread the reach of PAWS. “While Sea Ray created the program, we want all pet owners, boaters, and water lovers to benefit from its existence,” said Noyes.
